WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED TO MAKE TOASTED MARSHMALLOW SIMPLE SYRUP?

The Sweetener

The Sugar: For all of our simple syrup recipes we use Florida Crystals. Organic sugar produced by Florida Crystals is Non-GMO Project verified, vegan, kosher, minimally processed and unlike other sugarcane producers doesn’t use harmful pesticides and herbicides. While this doesn’t make it a super-food “per se”, it does mean it retains more of its nutrients, and contains less of the nasty stuff, than standard white sugar.

Recommended Sugar: If you plan on making simple syrup regularly, or are a keen baker then the 3 pack of the 3 Pound jug is the best value: FLORIDA CRYSTALS Natural Organic Sugar Cane, 3 Pound (Pack of 2).

The Flavoring

The Marshmallows: For this homemade simple syrup recipe you will need large marshmallows (the same as you’d use for s’mores). Grab your favorite kind, we typically use Kraft jet-puffed marshmallows

Recommended Marshmallows: Kraft Marshmallows (4 pack)

The Vanilla: Be sure to opt for “pure vanilla extract” which is made only from natural vanilla beans, water and alcohol. Any vanilla extract that doesn’t contain the word “pure” is a cheaper imitation that is made artificially. Due to the scarcity of vanilla, and the fluctuation in crop yields, vanilla is expensive. That said, a little goes a long way, so a good quality bottle will last you a long time. We use McCormick but Nielsen-Massey and Rodelle are other good options.

Recommended Vanilla Extract: McCormick Pure Vanilla Extract, 4 oz

The Water: When using water in cocktails, simple syrups, cooking or just drinking it throughout the day, use filtered water. Water straight from the tap contains tiny levels of chlorine and heavy metals, so you want to get rid of that before you use it. If you don’t already own one (or your refrigerator doesn’t already have a built in water filterer), then we’d recommend getting yourself a Brita pitcher.

Recommended Pitcher: BRITA Everyday Water Pitcher (10 cup)

WHAT EQUIPMENT SHOULD I USE TO MAKE TOASTED MARSHMALLOW SIMPLE SYRUP?

Saucepan: Heavy bottomed nonstick pans are what you want to be using for all of your cooking as they absorb and distribute heat more evenly which prevents sticking and burning. A saucepan with a pouring spout and straining lid is also useful, especially if you want to make flavored simple syrups by steeping berries or fruit. Our top pick is the Faberware nonstick saucepan in aqua blue. Not only is it reasonably priced but it’s fantastic quality and looks great too!

Recommended Pan: FABERWARE Nonstick Saucepan with Straining Lid (1 Quart)

Strainer: It’s best to strain your simple syrup before transferring it to a container. This will result in a smoother simple syrup as the melted marshmallows typically leave a little residue. You will need a medium sized fine mesh strainer, and there are plenty of great options on Amazon. We love this set of 3 from Makerstep as it gives you all the sizes you’ll need to cover any straining needs.

Recommended Strainer: MAKERSTEP Stainless Steel Mesh Strainers (Set of 3)

HOW SHOULD I STORE MY TOASTED MARSHMALLOW SIMPLE SYRUP?

Storage: This Toasted Marshmallow Simple Syrup can be stored in an airtight container for up to a 2 weeks. If you make cocktails regularly it is worth getting yourself some storage bottles specifically for your simple syrups. Anything made for pouring liquid will work e.g. olive oil dispensers. We’ve received plenty of compliments on our cork topped jug, and everyone is always surprised when we tell them it was less than $15 from Amazon!

Recommended Storage Bottle: BORMIOLI ROCCO Cork Topped Oil Bottle, (8 oz)

Funnel: Transferring simple syrup to a container can be messy, so to save your kitchen worktops we’d recommend buying a funnel. There are lots of affordable options on amazon and most of them are collapsible to save space in your kitchen cupboards.

Recommended Funnel: RIENAR Silicone Collapsible Funnel (2 Pack)
