The Pumpkin Spice Old Fashioned is the perfect sipper for a fall evening. Mixing bourbon with homemade Pumpkin Spice Simple Syrup and finished off with a few dashes of bitters, this cocktail will warm you up as the temperature starts to dip. This recipe supports local Florida businesses by using Florida Bourbon and Florida Cane Sugar in the simple syrup. Help support local and enjoy your Pumpkin Spice Old Fashioned.

What Ingredients Do I Need To Make A Pumpkin Spice Old Fashioned?

The Alcohol

The Whiskey: An Old Fashioned is 80% whiskey, so it is important that you choose a quality bourbon. Luckily, Florida has some fantastic bourbons to pick from. Our go to Florida whiskey for an Old Fashioned is Florida Double Cask Bourbon from St. Augustine Distillery. It goes particularly well in this Pumpkin Spice version, complimenting the baking spice notes already in the whiskey. Other great alternatives are Florida Reserve Bourbon from Timber Creek Distillery and Palm Ridge Reserve from Palm Ridge Distillery.

The Mixers

The Sweetener: Our homemade Pumpkin Spice Simple Syrup is what gives this Old Fashioned cocktail recipe a healthy dose of fall. This incredibly easy simple syrup recipe just involves simmering ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves with canned pumpkin, sugar and water. As well as using it in your fall cocktail recipes you can also use it to make a Pumpkin Spice Latte or even drizzle it over your pancakes.

The Bitters: Bitters are used in an Old Fashioned to balance out the sweetness and add complexity. Angostura Bitters are best to use for this Pumpkin Spice Old Fashioned as the spicy notes of cinnamon and clove double down on the spices used in the homemade Pumpkin Spice Simple Syrup.

Recommended Bitters: ANGOSTURA® bitters, 4 oz

What Equipment Should I Use To Make A Pumpkin Spice Old Fashioned?

You can see our full list of recommended bar equipment here.

The Glass: For this cocktail, use an Old Fashioned glass (also called rocks glass). If you’re starting out in the world of cocktail glassware, we’d recommend buying double Old Fashioned glasses (also called Double Rocks glasses). These are slightly larger than a single Old Fashioned glass, holding between 10-12 oz. This makes them more versatile as they allow more space for jumbo ice cubes and work great for other kinds of cocktails.

Recommended Glass: MARQUIS By Waterford Double Old Fashioned Glasses, Set of 4

The Ice: This fall Old Fashioned is a sipper, so it’s best to use large ice cubes. The larger the cube you use the less it will dilute the drink, so you can enjoy it for longer without it becoming too watery. You can find some great (and cheap) jumbo ice cube molds on Amazon. Just be sure to check the width of your glasses to ensure that they will fit.

Recommended Ice Cube Mold: COCKTAILOR Large Ice Mold, 6 Slot

Shaken or Stirred: Always stir an Old Fashioned. You can stir straight in the glass that you’re drinking out of, but it’s best to use a mixing glass. If you enjoy spirit forward cocktails like an Old Fashioned, a Negroni, or a Manhattan, then get yourself a mixing glass. It’s one of our most used pieces of bar equipment.

Recommended Mixing Glass: HIWARE Thick Bottom Crystal Mixing Glass, 24 oz
