What Ingredients Do I Need To Make A Toasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned?

The Alcohol

The Whiskey: An Old Fashioned is mostly whiskey so, for this toasted marshmallow spin on the classic, it is important that you choose a good quality bourbon. If you want to support local Florida then our go to Florida whiskey for an Old Fashioned is Florida Double Cask Bourbon from St. Augustine Distillery. This delightful bourbon is a must have addition for any bourbon drinker and the vanilla and chocolate notes are perfect for this Toasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned. Otherwise there are plenty of great whiskey options from our cousins in Kentucky. We recommend Bulleit Bourbon from Bulleit Distillery which is a great addition to your bar cart.

The Mixers

The Sweetener: Our homemade Toasted Marshmallow Simple Syrup gives this S’mores Old Fashioned recipe that oh so delicious campfire taste. This simple syrup recipe just involves toasting marshmallows in the oven and then mixing them with sugar, water and vanilla extract. It’s as easy as that. As well as using it in your fall and thanksgiving cocktail recipes you can also drizzle it over your pancakes or mix it into your oatmeal. Yum.

The Bitters: A traditional Old Fashioned recipe calls for Angostura Bitters, but for this s’mores twist we use chocolate bitters. This recreates the chocolate in the the s’more and completes this campfire Old Fashioned. Our favorite cocktail bitters are from Fee Brothers who produce a fantastic range of different flavored cocktail bitters.

The Garnish

The Graham Cracker Rim: If you want to go full campfire S’mores then a Graham cracker rim will really impress your friends and family. It also makes this drink taste even more like a S’more. We used Honey Maid as they were on BOGO, but we find that Amazon’s Happy Belly work just as well for this campfire cocktail.

To coat the rim of your glass first place the Graham crackers in a freezer bag and crush with the bottom of your cocktail shaker or a cocktail muddler until it looks like breadcrumbs. Then spread onto a small plate. Rub the rim of the glass with a little liquid (we used the simple syrup as it helps the coating stay put better). Finally, dip the rim of the glass in the Graham Cracker breadcrumbs until it is well coated.

The Marshmallow: What better way to finish off this S’mores Old Fashioned cocktail than with a toasted marshmallow. Grab your favorite kind, we typically use Kraft jet-puffed marshmallows. Put it on a skewer and toast it before placing atop your Toasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned.

Recommended Marshmallows: Kraft Marshmallows (4 pack)

What Equipment Should I Use To Make A Toasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned?

The Glass: The best option of glassware is the cocktail’s namesake, the Old Fashioned glass (also named a rocks glass). If you’re new to the world of cocktail glassware, we’d recommend buying the Double Old Fashioned glasses (also called Double Rocks glasses). These are slightly larger than a single Old Fashioned glass, holding between 10-12 oz. This makes them more versatile as they allow more space for large ice cubes and work great for all kinds of cocktails. Our favorites are these beautifully weighted glasses from Waterford.

Recommended Glass: MARQUIS By Waterford Double Old Fashioned Glasses, Set of 4

The Ice: The Toasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned is made to be sipped, preferably on a crisp night while sitting next to a firepit. So it’s best to use large ice cubes. The larger the cube, the less quickly it will dilute the drink, so you can enjoy it for longer. You can find some great (and affordable) jumbo ice cube molds on Amazon, just check the width of your glasses to ensure that they will fit. The 2 inch molds should fit most cocktail glasses.

Recommended Ice Cube Mold: COCKTAILOR Large Ice Mold, 6 Slot

The Strainer: When using a coattail mixing glass, you will need a hawthorne strainer. This tool is placed on top of a mixing glass and holds back the ice when you pour. Our recommended cocktail strainer is the OXO Steel Cocktail Strainer. This inexpensive strainer is durable and comfortable to use with its soft, non-slip finger rest

How Should I Serve A Toasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned?

Shaken or Stirred: An Old Fashioned cocktail is always stirred rather than shaken. You can mix straight in the glass but If you are making more than one, or If you enjoy spirit forward cocktails like Old Fashioned’s or Manhattan’s, then get yourself a mixing glass. It’s one of our most used pieces of bar equipment. It also looks great on the bar cart.

Recommended Mixing Glass: HIWARE Thick Bottom Crystal Mixing Glass, 24 oz

Cocktail Smoker KitThe Smoke: Cocktail smokers are fun to use and make your cocktails look really impressive. There are a few different types of cocktail smokers but some are a little complicated. The best ones are the ones that are actually easy to use.

Our favorite is the SIMOEFFI cocktail smoker kit which comes everything that you need to make this smoked old fashioned. Simply place the wooden smoker on top of your glass, add a pinch of wood chips and light with the included torch. After 15 seconds you can reveal the show stopping plume of smoke and enjoy your Toasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned Cocktail.
