WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED FOR MAKING TOASTED PECAN SIMPLE SYRUP?

This easy recipe requires just 3 ingredients- sugar, pecans and water. It is important that you use quality sugar when making simple syrups, and as luck would have it, Florida is home to one of the best sugar cane producers in the world, Florida Crystals.

The Sugar: To get those rich caramel flavors that you get with a pecan pie, we use turbinado cane sugar from Florida Crystals. This style of sugar is less refined than white sugar and therefore retains more of the natural molasses flavor. You can also use brown sugar, but we prefer using turbinado as the molasses flavors are a tiny bit subtler, so they don’t overpower the pecan flavor.

Apart from the great taste, another reason we always use Florida Crystals is because they are 100% organic. Organic sugar cane produced by Florida Crystals is Non-GMO Project verified, vegan, kosher, minimally processed and unlike other sugarcane producers doesn’t use harmful pesticides and herbicides. While this doesn’t make it a super-food “per se”, it does mean it retains more of its nutrients, and contains less of the nasty stuff, than standard sugars.

Not only is it the smarter choice for your body, but it is also the smarter choice for the planet. Florida Crystals boasts some of the most eco-friendly farms in the nation leveraging technology, natural pest control (barn owls) and crop rotation to ensure that the sugar they produce is sustainable and has minimal impact on the environment

Bakers and home bartenders might want to buy their multi pack as it is much better value:

Pecans: If you are up in North Florida then buy local! The Pecan Outlet is located in St. Augustine Florida and has a few other outlets dotted about northern Florida. They also ship but depending on where you are that can be expensive. If we can’t get local then we use Anna & Sarah Pecans which are grown in Mexico and packaged in New Jersey. You can buy them on Amazon.

Recommended Local Pecans: Pecan Outlet 10oz New Crop Pecans

Recommended Alternative Pecans: Anna and Sarah Shelled Pecans- 2 Lbs

The Water: Anytime that you use water in cocktails, simple syrups or just drinking it throughout the day, use filtered water. Water straight from the tap contains tiny amounts of chlorine and heavy metals, so you want to get rid of that before you use it. If you don’t already own one, then we’d recommend getting yourself a Brita pitcher, ours gets a lot of use.

Recommended Pitcher: BRITA Everyday Water Pitcher (10 cup)

HOW SHOULD I STORE MY TOASTED PECAN SIMPLE SYRUP?

Storage: This Toasted Pecan Simple Syrup can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks, but it’s so tasty we doubt it will last that long! You can store your simple syrup in any airtight bottle or container. If you make cocktails, and use simple syrups regularly however, it is worth getting yourself some storage bottles specifically for your simple syrups. Anything made for pouring liquid will work, so things like olive oil dispensers are perfect. We use a cork topped jug, that we got from Amazon for around $10!

Recommended Storage Bottle: BORMIOLI ROCCO Cork Topped Oil Bottle, (8 oz)

Funnel: A funnel will make transferring your simple syrup to a bottle a breeze. There are plenty of affordable options on amazon and many of them are collapsible to save on space in your kitchen cupboards.

Recommended Funnel: RIENAR Silicone Collapsible Funnel (2 Pack)
