The History

The Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned cocktail, a classic and beloved libation, originated in the United States in the early 19th century. It began life as a simple combination of any base spirit (typically whiskey), sugar, water, and bitters. Originally simply known as the “whiskey cocktail,” it epitomized the earliest form of mixed drinks.

Over time, while many cocktails became more complex, the Old Fashioned maintained its unadorned, pure character, earning its name as the “Old Fashioned” cocktail. This timeless and straightforward drink has continued to captivate palates for over a century, making it one of the most iconic and popular cocktails in history.

Bowl of Candy CornCandy Corn

The beloved Halloween treat, has a sweet and simple history. It was created in the late 19th century, with its origins often attributed to George Renninger, an employee of the Wunderlee Candy Company in Philadelphia. This classic tri-colored candy was obviously modelled after a corn kernel and It quickly gained popularity due to its appealing appearance and sweet, honey-flavored taste.

Whereas it was originally created by hand in a labor-intensive process, in the 20th century, the Goelitz Confectionery Company, now known as the Jelly Belly Candy Company, began mass-producing candy corn using a more efficient process. This made candy corn more accessible and affordable to a broader audience.

The Alcohol

The Whiskey: In an Old Fashioned, the Whiskey is the star of the show, so for this candy corn spin on the classic cocktail, it is important that you choose a good quality bourbon. If you want to support local Florida then our go to Florida whiskey for an Old Fashioned is Florida Double Cask Bourbon from St. Augustine Distillery. This wonderful bourbon is a must have addition for any bourbon drinker and the vanilla notes pair perfectly in this Candy Corn Old Fashioned recipe. If you’re not from Florida though there are plenty of great whiskey options from our friend in Kentucky. We recommend Bulleit Bourbon from Bulleit Distillery which is the perfect staple bourbon to add to any bar cart.

Candy Corn is the perfect ingredient for homemade simple syrup, It’s flavor has notes of buttery vanilla, marshmallow and honey which make it the ideal ingredient to add to fall cocktails or drizzle on pancakes. There are a few different brands that make candy corn, but we go with Brach’s, it’s America’s number one Candy Corn for a reason!

As well as using it in your Halloween, fall and thanksgiving cocktail recipes you can also drizzle it over your pancakes or mix it into your oatmeal. Delicious.

The Bitters: A traditional Old Fashioned recipe calls for Angostura Bitters, but for this fall cocktail twist we use walnut bitters. This splash of nutty flavor pairs perfectly with the candy corn flavor and makes the cocktail pop. Our favorite cocktail bitters are from Fee Brothers who produce a fantastic range of different flavored cocktail bitters.

The Garnish

The Marshmallow: What better way to finish off this S’mores Old Fashioned cocktail than with a toasted marshmallow. Grab your favorite kind, we typically use Kraft jet-puffed marshmallows. Put it on a skewer and toast it before placing atop your Toasted Marshmallow Old Fashioned.

Recommended Marshmallows: Kraft Marshmallows (4 pack)

What Equipment Should I Use To Make This Candy Corn Old Fashioned Recipe?

The Ice: The Candy Corn Old Fashioned is made to be sipped, preferably on a crisp night while sitting next to a firepit. So it’s best to use large ice cubes. The larger the cube, the less quickly it will dilute the drink, so you can enjoy it for longer. You can find some great (and affordable) jumbo ice cube molds on Amazon, just check the width of your glasses to ensure that they will fit. The 2 inch molds should fit most cocktail glasses.

Recommended Ice Cube Mold: COCKTAILOR Large Ice Mold, 6 Slot

Shaken or Stirred: An Old Fashioned cocktail should always be stirred and never shaken. If you are making a single cocktail then you can mix straight in the glass. If you are making more than one, or If you enjoy spirit forward cocktails like Old Fashioned’s or Manhattan’s, then buy yourself a mixing glass. It’s an inexpensive, but much used piece of bar equipment. It also looks great on the bar cart.

Recommended Mixing Glass: HIWARE Thick Bottom Crystal Mixing Glass, 24 oz

The Strainer: When using a cocktail mixing glass, you will also need a Hawthorne strainer. This tool is placed on top of a mixing glass and holds back the ice when you pour your old fashioned cocktail. Our recommended cocktail strainer is the OXO Steel Cocktail Strainer. This inexpensive strainer is durable and comfortable to use with its soft, non-slip finger rest.

How Should I Serve This Candy Corn Old Fashioned Recipe?

Double Old Fashioned GlassThe Glass: This cocktail is so popular that it has a glass named after it. The best option of glassware for this cocktail is it’s namesake, the Old Fashioned glass (also referred to as a rocks glass). If you’re new to the world of cocktail glassware, we’d recommend buying the Double Old Fashioned glasses (also referred to as Double Rocks glasses). These are slightly larger than a single Old Fashioned glass, holding between 10-12 oz. This makes them much more versatile as they allow more space for large ice cubes and also work great for all kinds of other cocktails. Our favorite glasses are these beautifully weighted glasses from Waterford.

Recommended Glass: MARQUIS By Waterford Double Old Fashioned Glasses, Set of 4
