What Ingredients Do I Need To Make Apple Cider Sangria?

The Alcohol

Spiced Rum: White Sangria recipes typically include brandy, but we switch that out for spiced rum to really dial up the notes of warming baking spices.

Spiced rum starts it’s life as a gold or dark rum which means that it has been aged in oak barrels to give it that darker hue. Towards the end of it’s aging, typically somewhere during it’s last three months, the spices are added. The specific spices depend on the distiller and are typically a closely guarded secret. Commonly used spices include cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and anise. No surprise then that it pairs so perfectly with fall apple cider!

White Wine: You can pick your favorite white wine for this white sangria recipe, you really can’t really go too wrong with what you choose. We typically use a Pinot Grigio as apple and pears are key flavor notes in this style of wine.

The Mixers

Apple Cider: It’s that time of year again and apple cider is everywhere. During the fall and winter months you should easily be able to buy apple cider at your local store or farmers market. Unfortunately for us Floridians, apples grow best in cold climates, so you won’t be buying any local Florida apple cider. The apple cider you can purchase in the store will likely be from our friends from up north in Washington, New York, and Michigan, where over 75% of American apples are grown.

Club Soda: Adding a little club soda gives this Apple Cider Sangria a slight sparkle which is the finishing touch to this fabulous fall drink.

Recommended White Wine: Polar Club Soda

Fruit: Use whatever fresh fruit is in season. Fall is great time of year for apples, pears, plums, cranberries, figs and pomegranates. For this fall sangria recipe we use fresh apples, pears and cranberries.

Vanilla Extract: Make sure that you choose “pure vanilla extract” which is made only from natural vanilla beans, water and alcohol. If it doesn’t contain the word “pure” then it is a cheaper imitation that is artificially made. Due to the scarcity of vanilla, and the fluctuation in crop yields, vanilla is expensive. That said, a little goes a long way. We use Nielsen-Massey, but Rodelle is another good option.

Recommended Vanilla Extract: Nielsen-Massey Pure Vanilla Extract, 4 oz

How Should I Serve Apple Cider Sangria?

The Pitcher: For Sangria you always want to use a glass pitcher or carafe so that you can see all of that fresh fruit inside. Make sure that your pitcher is at least 40oz so that you have enough space. Sangria is meant to be made in batches which is why it’s a great option when you’ve got lots of guests. There are plenty of affordable options on Amazon, like this 44oz Glass Pitcher set that you can pick up for under $30.

Recommended Sangria Pitcher Set: 44oz Glass Pitcher with 6 Glasses

The Garnish: To finish off this fall happy hour cocktail we like to create an apple fan. To make this garnish, cut 3 slices of apple and lay on top of each other. Next skewer one end of the slices with a cocktail stick. Now fan the other end of the apple slices out. Voilà, the perfect fall garnish to place atop your Martini. We love these fun cocktail sticks with gold pearls on the end, which really jazz up any homemade cocktail. (They also come in different colors).
