It’s fall and that means it’s time to enjoy apple cider! We love to include it in our cocktails, and we have the perfect recipe for you to enjoy on a fall evening. The Apple of My Rye is a fall spin on a Manhattan, mixing spicy rye whiskey with apple cider, orange liqueur and spiced apple simple syrup. This apple cider whiskey cocktail supports local Florida distilleries by using local Floridian rye whiskey and a wonderful local version of Cointreau. See below for our top recommendations on Florida alcohol to use in this recipe and help support local. Enjoy the Apple of My Rye cocktail and happy fall!

WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED TO MAKE THIS APPLE CIDER WHISKEY COCKTAIL?

THE ALCOHOL

The Rye Whiskey: The spicy character of rye compliments apple cider perfectly. The Apple of My Rye is a spirit-forward cocktail, with 50% of the drink being made up of rye whiskey. This means there is no hiding low-quality whiskey behind mixers, so you want to choose a quality rye whiskey.

Florida distills some great rye whiskey at a number of distilleries across the state.  Help support local Florida distilleries and pick some up today, some of our favorite Florida Rye Whiskies are below.

The Orange Liqueur: You can use Cointreau, but Florida has their very own local version! Tippler’s made by St. Petersburg Distillery uses whole Florida oranges, peel and all. If you want to support local, then this is a great addition to your bar cart. FYI it also goes great in our Pineapple Margarita, Florida Orange Cosmopolitan and our Grapefruit Martini.

THE MIXERS

The Apple Cider: It’s apple cider season, so you should easily be able to pick this up at your local store or farmers market. Sadly, apples grow best in cold climates, so you won’t be buying any local Florida apple cider. The apple cider you get at the store will likely be from our friends from up north in Washington, New York and Michigan, where over 75% of our apples are grown.

The Sweetener: Homemade Spiced Apple Simple Syrup doubles down on the spicy character in the rye whiskey and adds those warming baking spices that make this such a great fall cocktail. This simple syrup is super easy to make and perfect to keep in the refrigerator to add to all your fall drinks.

HOW SHOULD I SERVE THIS APPLE CIDER WHISKEY COCKTAIL?

The Glass: As this is a Manhattan style cocktail the best option is a coupe glass. You can also use any other thin stemmed glass like a martini glass. These styles of glass were specifically designed for chilled cocktails that are served straight up rather than over ice. The stem prevents your hand touching the side of the glass and warming up your drink.

Recommended coupe glass: LUMINARC Coupe Glass, Set of 4

Straight Up Or On The Rocks: Serve the Apple of My Rye straight up and chilled. We would recommend chilling your glass first by filling with ice and topping up with chilled water. Dump the ice and water when you are ready to strain and enjoy your ice-cold cocktail.

Shaken Or Stirred: You want to stir this apple cider whiskey cocktail. Stirring cocktails results in a clearer cocktail with less dilution so that you can let that rye whiskey shine. If you enjoy spirit forward cocktails like a Manhattan, a Negroni, or an Old Fashioned, then we’d suggest getting yourself a mixing glass. It’s one of our most used pieces of barware.

Recommended Mixing Glass: HIWARE Thick Bottom Crystal Mixing Glass, 24 oz

The Garnish: Make an apple fan garnish by cutting three slices of apple and laying on top of each other fanning them out so that they are slightly overlapping. Secure in place with a clove or a shortened piece of cocktail stick.

We hope you enjoy the Apple of My Rye Cocktail Recipe below, and as always drink local and drink responsibly. Cheers!
