WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED FOR MAKING STRAWBERRY SIMPLE SYRUP?
This easy Strawberry Simple Syrup recipe only requires 3 ingredients- sugar, strawberries and water. It’s important to use a high quality sugar when making homemade simple syrup and luckily Florida is home to one of the best sugar cane producers in the country, Florida Crystals.
The Sugar: We recommend using raw sugarcane for making simple syrup. This type of sugar is unrefined and has a much more full-bodied taste than standard white sugar. Florida accounts for over half of the production of sugarcane in the United States, and is also home to the only organic raw cane sugar producer in the country, Florida Crystals.
Why Organic Is Best: Organic sugar cane produced by Florida Crystals is minimally processed and unlike other sugarcane producers doesn’t use harmful pesticides and herbicides. This means it retains more of its nutrients, and contains less nasty stuff, than standard white sugar.
It is also the smarter choice for the environment. Florida Crystals boasts some of the most eco-friendly farms in the country leveraging technology, natural pest control (barn owls) and crop rotation to ensure that the sugar they produce has minimal impact on the environment.
Recommended Sugar: FLORIDA CRYSTALS Natural Organic Sugar Cane, 3 Pound (Pack of 2).
The Strawberries: You will likely be able to find fresh Florida strawberries during strawberry season, which runs from late December to early June, but they are at their juiciest in March and April.
Anyone that has been to Florida Strawberry festival in Plant City will know that strawberries are a pretty big deal in Florida. If you haven’t been before then we would highly recommend it. The festival includes a whole host of strawberry themed entertainment including rides, contests, merch, food, drink and much more. This year it runs from 4th-14th of March and tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children. You can book your tickets online here.
The Water: When you are using water in cocktails or simple syrups, always use filtered water. Filtering removes the tiny amounts of chlorine and heavy metals that is present in tap water. If you don’t already own one, then we’d highly recommend getting yourself a Brita pitcher, ours gets a lot of use.
Recommended Pitcher: BRITA Everyday Water Pitcher (10 cup)
HOW SHOULD I STORE MY STRAWBERRY SIMPLE SYRUP?
Storage: This Strawberry Simple Syrup can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. That said, it’s so tasty that we doubt it will last that long! If you use simple syrups in cocktails regularly, it is worth getting yourself some storage bottles specifically for your simple syrups. Anything made for pouring liquid will work, so things like olive oil bottles are perfect. We use a cork topped jug, that we purchased for around $10 from Amazon!
Recommended Storage Bottle: BORMIOLI ROCCO Cork Topped Oil Bottle, (8 oz)
Funnel: If you are transferring simple syrup to a bottle then it can get a bit messy. A funnel makes it much easier. There are plenty of affordable options on Amazon and many of them are collapsible silicone to save on space in your kitchen cupboards.
Recommended Funnel: RIENAR Silicone Collapsible Funnel (2 Pack)
