WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED FOR MAKING SPICED APPLE SIMPLE SYRUP?
The Sugar
We recommend using raw sugarcane for making simple syrup. This style of sugar is unrefined and has a much more full-bodied taste than standard white sugar. Sugarcane grows best in tropical climates, requiring extended seasons of hot weather and plenty of rainfall. With plentiful sunshine and rainstorms galore, it is no surprise that Florida accounts for over half of the production of sugarcane in the United States. Florida is also home to the only organic raw cane sugar producer in the country, Florida Crystals.
Organic sugar cane produced by Florida Crystals is Non-GMO Project verified, vegan, kosher, minimally processed and unlike other sugarcane producers doesn’t use harmful pesticides and herbicides. While this doesn’t make it a super-food “per se”, it does mean it retains more of its nutrients, and contains less of the nasty stuff, than standard white sugar.
As well as being the smarter choice for your body, it is also the smarter choice for the environment. Florida Crystals boasts some of the most eco-friendly farms in the country leveraging technology, natural pest control (barn owls) and crop rotation to ensure that the sugar they produce is sustainable and has minimal impact on the environment
Recommended Sugar: If you regularly make simple syrup or are a keen baker then the multi pack of the 3 Pound jug is the best value:

The Other Ingredients
The Apple: Apples thrive in cold and wet climates so it’s little surprise that Florida isn’t known for it’s apples. Although technically it is possible to grow some varieties in Florida, the majority of US apples are grown in the north. Around three quarters of apples grown in the US are grown in three states; Washington, New York and Michigan.
For the type of apple, just pick your favorite variety. As we are using these for their flavor, we don’t need to worry about things such as consistency and texture which is important if using for baking or salads. We typically use Fuji, Gala or Braeburn.
The Spices: This simple syrup recipe is full of those warming fall spices that pair so well with apple. Cinnamon is the main player, and then nutmeg and ginger complete the spice mix.
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
If you don’t have any nutmeg and ginger in your pantry then you can also make a great cinnamon spiced apple simple syrup by replacing the nutmeg and ginger with another 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon.
The Water: When using water in any kind of cooking or drinks use filtered water. Water straight from the tap contains tiny amounts of chlorine and heavy metals, and a filter will remove these. Get yourself a Brita pitcher, they are great to have in the refrigerator.
Recommended Pitcher: BRITA Everyday Water Pitcher (10 cup)
WHAT EQUIPMENT SHOULD I USE FOR MAKING SPICED APPLE SIMPLE SYRUP?
Saucepan: Use a heavy bottomed nonstick pan. These are designed to absorb and distribute heat more evenly to prevent your ingredients from sticking and burning.
Recommended Pan: FABERWARE Nonstick Saucepan with Straining Lid (1 Quart)
Strainer: At the end of this recipe you will strain the syrup through a fine mess strainer to remove the apple and press out all that syrupy goodness. If you are a keen cook, then a good fine mesh strainer is a useful piece of equipment to have in the kitchen.
Recommended Strainer: MAKERSTEP Stainless Steel Mesh Strainers (Set of 3)
HOW SHOULD I STORE MY SPICED APPLE SIMPLE SYRUP?
Storage: Your Spiced Apple Simple Syrup can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three weeks. If you make cocktails and use simple syrups regularly, then get yourself some storage bottles specifically for your syrups. Anything made for storing and pouring liquid will do the job. Things like olive oil dispensers work great.
Recommended Storage Bottle: BORMIOLI ROCCO Cork Topped Oil Bottle, (8 oz)
Funnel: A funnel can be used to easily transfer your simple syrups to a storage bottle. There are plenty of modestly priced options on Amazon, many of which collapse to save space in your kitchen cupboards.
Recommended Funnel: RIENAR Silicone Collapsible Funnel (2 Pack)
