WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED FOR MAKING PUMPKIN SPICE SIMPLE SYRUP?
The Sugar
We recommend using raw sugarcane for making simple syrup. This style of sugar is unrefined and while this doesn’t make it a super-food “per se”, it does mean it retains more of its nutrients, and contains less of the nasty stuff, than standard white sugar.
Sugarcane grows best in tropical climates, requiring extended seasons of hot weather and plenty of rainfall. With sunshine and rainstorms galore, it is no surprise that Florida accounts for over half of the production of sugarcane in the United States. Florida is also home to the only organic raw cane sugar producer in the country, Florida Crystals.
Organic sugar cane produced by Florida Crystals is Non-GMO Project verified, vegan, kosher, minimally processed and unlike other sugarcane producers doesn’t use harmful pesticides and herbicides. Not only is it the smarter choice for your body, but it is also the smarter choice for the environment. Florida Crystals boasts some of the most eco-friendly farms in the nation leveraging technology, natural pest control (barn owls) and crop rotation to ensure that the sugar they produce is sustainable and has minimal impact on the environment.
Recommended Sugar: If you are a keen baker, or regularly make simple syrup, then the multi pack of the 3 Pound jug is the best value:
If you are short of space in the pantry then they do a more manageable 2 Pound single pack:
The Other Ingredients
The Pumpkin: This isn’t an ingredient that you are going to easily be able to shop locally for in Florida. You can of course pick up a pumpkin at a local pumpkin patch and make your own pumpkin puree, but it’s easier to buy canned from the store. The majority of commercially grown pumpkins come from Illinois, so it’s likely that that’s where the pumpkin puree in your can comes from. We use Libby’s 100% pure pumpkin that is grown and canned in Illinois.
Recommended Canned Pumpkin: Libby’s 100% Pure Pumpkin (Pack of 4)
The Pumpkin Spice: Pumpkin spice is a mixture of ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground nutmeg and ground cloves. If you have these spices in your pantry then it is super easy to make at home. We use the ratios on allrecipes that recommends:
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
If you’d prefer to buy the spice premade then the mix from Trader Joe’s is a great option.
Recommended Pumpkin Spice: Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Spice
The Water: If you are using water in any kind of cooking or drinks use filtered water. Water straight from the tap contains tiny amounts of chlorine and heavy metals, so you want to get rid of that before you use it. Get yourself a Brita pitcher, they are great to have in the refrigerator.
Recommended Pitcher: BRITA Everyday Water Pitcher (10 cup)
WHAT EQUIPMENT SHOULD I USE FOR MAKING PUMPKIN SPICE SIMPLE SYRUP?
Saucepan: Use a heavy bottomed nonstick pan. These are constructed to absorb and distribute heat more evenly to prevent your ingredients from sticking and burning.
Recommended Pan: FABERWARE Nonstick Saucepan with Straining Lid (1 Quart)
Strainer: At the end of this recipe you will need to strain the syrup through a fine mess strainer to remove any pumpkin pulp. This is an inexpensive piece of equipment that has plenty of other uses if you are a keen cook.
Recommended Strainer: MAKERSTEP Stainless Steel Mesh Strainers (Set of 3)
HOW SHOULD I STORE MY PUMPKIN SPICE SIMPLE SYRUP?
Storage: Your Pumpkin Spice Simple Syrup can be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks. If you make cocktails and use simple syrups regularly, we’d recommend getting yourself some storage bottles specifically for your syrups. Anything made for pouring liquid will do the job, so things like olive oil dispensers work great. We’ve received plenty of compliments on our cork topped jug, and everyone is always surprised when we tell them it was only around $10 from Amazon!
Recommended Storage Bottle: BORMIOLI ROCCO Cork Topped Oil Bottle, (8 oz)
Funnel: A funnel makes transferring your simple syrup to a bottle a breeze. It realy saves you from making a mess of your kitchen worktops! There are lots of reasonably priced options on Amazon, most of which collapse to save space in your kitchen cupboards.
Recommended Funnel: RIENAR Silicone Collapsible Funnel (2 Pack)
