WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED FOR MAKING MIXED BERRY SIMPLE SYRUP?
This easy recipe requires just 3 ingredients- sugar, berries and water. It is important that you use good quality sugar when making simple syrups, and as luck would have it, Florida is home to one of the best sugar cane producers in the world, Florida Crystals.
The Sugar
We recommend always using raw sugarcane for making simple syrup. This type of sugar is unrefined and has a much more full-bodied taste than standard white sugar. Florida accounts for over half of the production of sugarcane in the United States, and Florida is also home to the only organic raw cane sugar producer in the country, Florida Crystals.
Why Organic Is Best: Organic sugar cane produced by Florida Crystals is Non-GMO Project verified, vegan, kosher, minimally processed and unlike other sugarcane producers doesn’t use harmful pesticides and herbicides. While this doesn’t make it a super-food, it does mean it retains more of its nutrients, and contains less nasty stuff, than standard sugar.
As well as being the smarter choice for your body, it is also the smarter choice for the environment. Florida Crystals boasts some of the most eco-friendly farms in the country leveraging technology, natural pest control (barn owls) and crop rotation to ensure that the sugar they produce has minimal impact on the environment.
Recommended Sugar: FLORIDA CRYSTALS Natural Organic Sugar Cane, 3 Pound (Pack of 2).
The Berries
For this Mixed Berry Simple Syrup Recipe you can pick and mix your favorite berries. We typically make up our mixture using half a cup of chopped strawberries, quarter a cup of chopped raspberries and quarter a cup of chopped blackberries.
Anyone that has been to Florida Strawberry festival in Plant City will know that strawberries are a pretty big deal in Florida. Strawberry season runs from late December to early June, but they are at their juiciest in March and April.
The Water
When you are using water in cocktails, simple syrups or just drinking it throughout the day, always use filtered water. Water straight from the tap contains tiny amounts of chlorine and heavy metals, which you want to get rid of before you use. If you don’t already own one, then we’d recommend getting yourself a Brita pitcher, ours gets a lot of use.
Recommended Pitcher: BRITA Everyday Water Pitcher (10 cup)
HOW SHOULD I STORE MY MIXED BERRY SIMPLE SYRUP?
Storage: This Mixed Berry Simple Syrup can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks, but it’s so tasty that we doubt it will last that long! If you make cocktails regularly, it is worth getting yourself some storage bottles specifically for your simple syrups. Anything made for pouring liquid will work, so things like olive oil dispensers are perfect. We use a cork topped jug, that we purchased for around $10 from Amazon!
Recommended Storage Bottle: BORMIOLI ROCCO Cork Topped Oil Bottle, (8 oz)
Funnel: A funnel makes it easy to transfer your simple syrup to a bottle. There are plenty of affordable options on Amazon and many of them are collapsible to save on space in your kitchen cupboards.
Recommended Funnel: RIENAR Silicone Collapsible Funnel (2 Pack)
