The whiskey sour is a classic mix of whiskey, tart citrus and simple syrup adorned with an elegant frothy egg white top. Made with a little care this cocktail is a perfect harmony of sweet and sour that can be enjoyed pre or post dinner. In a nod to the beautiful Florida Keys, this Lime Whiskey Sour recipe puts a Florida spin on the classic by replacing the more traditional lemon juice with key lime juice and using a homemade lime simple syrup.
What Ingredients Do I Need?
The Liquor: Most people opt for Bourbon in their Whiskey Sour, which owing to its sweetness plays really nicely in the sweet-sour combination. If you are a Rye fan, or simply looking to experiment, then switching in a Rye whiskey adds spice to the mix.
Recommended Florida Bourbons:
- Florida Double Cask Bourbon– St. Augustine Distillery
- Bear Gully Classic Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon– Winter Park Distillery
- Florida Reserve Bourbon– Timber Creek Distillery
- Old St. Pete Sweet Corn Whiskey– St. Petersburg Distillery
Recommended Florida Rye:
- Mr. Rye 100% Rye Whiskey– Kozuba & Sons Distillery
- Florida Black Rye Whiskey– Timber Creek Distillery

The Sweetener: Traditionally a whiskey sour calls for plain simple syrup which will work great if that is what you have. To really dial up the lime flavor we recommend using a homemade lime simple syrup.
The Citrus:
Fresh: Fresh key limes can be difficult to find but keep an eye out because depending on your location you might be able to pick them up in your local store. If not then you can absolutely use the more common Persian lime, you will just loose a touch of tartness and the more floral character you get from key limes. If you use a lot of fresh citrus juice, then buy a citrus press- it’s a game changer. You get a lot more juice out of your lemons and limes, you don’t have to worry about seeds, and you cut down on the mess of squeezing with your hands. We use a Zulay citrus press which has the added bonus of being a robust two in one design that handles both lemons and limes with equally perfect results.
Recommended Juicer: Zulay Premium Citrus Press
Bottled: If you prefer to have bottled lime juice at the ready whenever you might need it, then Nellie & Joes: Key West Lime Juice is the undisputed king of lime juice.
Recommended Lime Juice: NELLY & JOE’S Key West Lime Juice, 16 oz
The Bitters: Adding the bitters at the end adds another layer of complexity by complimenting the sweet and sour with some bitter notes. This is optional, but we would recommend doing it. You can play around with different types of bitters, but we stick with Angostura Aromatic Bitters for this recipe.
Recommended bitters: ANGOSTURA® bitters, 4 oz
The Garnish: Serve with a lime twist. If you want to make it look even fancier, then you can also grate some fresh lime zest over the foam.
What Equipment Should I Use?
The Glass: Serve in a coupe glass. This glass is perfect for chilled cocktails that are served without ice as the stem prevents your hand from warming up the drink. The elegant shape also works very well with any recipe that has an egg white foam making your photos very Instagrammable.
Recommended coupe glass: LUMINARC Coupe Glass, Set of 4
Shaken or Stirred: If you’re using egg white, as this recipe recommends, then you are going to want to shake this cocktail so that you get the trademark velvety foam on the surface of your lime whiskey sour. It’s important that you use a dry shake to incorporate the egg white properly with the other ingredients. A dry shake just means that you first shake all the ingredients in a shaker without the ice before adding the ice and giving it a second shake.
Recommended cocktail shaker: ABSOLUT ELYX BOUTIQUE Brass Cocktail Shaker

Straight up or on the rocks: If you are skipping the egg white then it is personal preference, but we always pour our whiskey sours straight up.
