This Florida Orange Manhattan recipe gives an orangey twist to the popular classic cocktail to bring the Florida orange groves right to your glass. Mixing spicy rye whiskey with sweet vermouth, orange liqueur and a dash of orange bitters, the Orange Manhattan is the ultimate evening sipper. We give the traditional recipe a Florida spin by using local Floridian rye whiskey and a wonderful orange liqueur called Tippler’s from St. Petersburg Distillery. Help support local Florida distilleries and enjoy the Florida Orange Manhattan.

WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED TO MAKE AN ORANGE MANHATTAN

The Rye Whiskey: Rye whiskey is used in a Manhattan cocktail as the spicy character complements the sweet complexity of the red vermouth. You want to choose a quality rye whiskey. The Manhattan is a spirit-forward cocktail, so there’s no hiding a low-quality rye whiskey behind mixers.

Florida has started distilling some great rye whiskey at a number of distilleries across the state. Two of our favorites are Wild Buck American Rye Whiskey from Njoy Distillery in Weeki Wachee, Florida Black Rye Whiskey from Timber Creek Distillery in the Panhandle and Palm Ridge Rye from Florida Farm Distillers in Umatilla. Both these use local farm grown Florida rye grain and are made and bottled right here in Florida. Help support local Florida distilleries and pick some up today.

The Orange Liqueur: You can use Cointreau, but Florida has their own local version! We use the delicious local Florida orange liqueur from St. Petersburg distillery called Tippler’s. If you want to support local, then this is a great addition to your bar cart. FYI it also goes great in our Pineapple Margarita, Florida Orange Cosmopolitan and Grapefruit Martini.

Sweet Vermouth: Typically produced in Italy, sweet or red vermouths are a style of fortified wine. They are sweet offering notes of vanilla and winter spices. Our favorite sweet vermouth for a Manhattan is Cocchi Storico Vermouth di Torino. Unlike lower-end vermouths, this is so good that it can be enjoyed by itself on the rocks.

As you are only using half the usual amount of vermouth in this particular recipe you can get away with using a lower-end vermouth like Martini & Rossi Rosso, if that’s what you have on your bar cart. If you enjoy Manhattan’s or are making a more traditional Manhattan, then we would recommend opting for the Cocchi Storico Vermouth di Torino.

Recommended Sweet Vermouth (For Regular Manhattan Drinkers): Cocchi Storico Vermouth di Torino.

Recommended Sweet Vermouth (For Occasional Manhattan Drinkers): Martini & Rossi Rosso Sweet Vermouth

THE MIXERS

The Bitters: Use Orange Bitters to really double down on the orange flavors. We use Angostura Orange Bitters. It’s a great addition to the bar cart and can be used in any recipe that calls for bitters.

Recommended Bitters: ANGOSTURA® Orange Bitters, 4 oz

The Garnish: A Manhattan simply must include a Maraschino Cherry or two. These addictive little gems are perfect in boozy evening cocktails such as a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned. We also add an orange twist to complete the Orange Manhattan.

Recommended Cherries: LUXARDO Maraschino Cherries, 14.1 oz

HOW SHOULD I SERVE AN ORANGE MANHATTAN?

The Glass: A coupe glass is perfect for a Manhattan cocktail. You can also use any other thin stemmed glass like a martini glass. These styles of glass were designed specifically for chilled cocktails that are served straight up. The stem prevents your hand from warming up the drink.

Recommended coupe glass: LUMINARC Coupe Glass, Set of 4

Straight Up Or On The Rocks: Always serve straight up and chilled, never on the rocks. We also chill our glass by filling with ice and topping up with chilled water. Dump the ice and water just before serving.

Shaken Or Stirred: Shaking will make the cocktail cloudy which you don’t want. Always stir a Manhattan. If you enjoy spirit forward cocktails like a Manhattan, a Negroni, or an Old Fashioned, then we’d suggest getting yourself a mixing glass. It’s one of our most used pieces of cocktail equipment.

Recommended Mixing Glass: HIWARE Thick Bottom Crystal Mixing Glass, 24 oz
