What Ingredients Do I Need To Make An Orange Daiquiri?

The Rum: For this recipe you want to use a good quality silver (white) rum. You want it to be smooth but with enough backbone to cut through the citrus. Anything aged or spiced will be too bold and as a result the subtle orange notes of this cocktail would be lost among these more complex styles of rum. Florida has an abundance of fantastic rum distilleries, the options really are endless! For example a few of our favorites are Wicked Dolphin Distillery in Cape Coral, Big 5 Rum Distillery in New Port Richey, Ziami Distillery in Hollywood, Siesta Key Distillery in Sarasota,  and Steel Tie Distillery in West Palm Beach.

The Citrus:

Fresh Orange: Fresh Florida orange should be easy to find, as the state produces over 70% of the countries supply of citrus. For this recipe you absolutely need to use freshly squeezed orange juice. You are looking for that light and freshly subtle orange flavor that you only get from fresh oranges. Using store bought will make the drink too sweet and will have that artificial orangey tang. You can squeeze it with your hands as this recipe only calls for 1 oz. However, If you don’t want to make a mess, then we’d recommend buying an orange juicer. We use a simple hand juicer that is affordable and gets the job done.

Fresh Lime: Buy a citrus press. It is a game changer. You get a lot more juice out of your lemons and limes, you don’t have to worry about seeds, and you cut down on the mess of squeezing with your hands. We use a Zulay citrus press which has the added bonus of being a two in one design so it handles both lemons and limes with equally perfect results.

The Sweetener:

You can use plain simple syrup, but why not enhance the orange flavor with our homemade orange simple syrup?

The Garnish: The Orange Daiquiri is a simple yet elegant drink, so match that with the garnish. We use a straightforward orange twist. Alternative you can use an orange wheel on the rim of the glass, or cut a thin orange wheel to float on the surface of the drink.

What Equipment Should I Use To Make An Orange Daiquiri?

The Glass: Daiquiris are best served in thin stemmed glasses like coupe or martini glasses. These styles of glass were designed for chilled cocktails that are served without ice, as the stem prevents your hand from warming up the drink. Either works, but we typically opt for a coupe glass. When you think of Daiquiris served in beach bars, you might think of the hurricane glass. These however are the wilder cousin, the frozen Daiquiri. These are blended with ice these don’t have to worry about hands warming the drink, hence the stemless glass.

Recommended coupe glass: LUMINARC Coupe Glass, Set of 4

Shaken or Stirred: For cocktail recipes that contain fruit juice you always want to shake them to ensure they are properly mixed, ice cold and refreshing. Therefore always shake your Daiquiris.

Recommended cocktail shaker: GODINGER Crystal Cocktail Shaker

Straight up or on the rocks: Daiquiris are best enjoyed straight up. Just be sure to shake well and chill your glass first by filling your glass with ice and filling with cold water. Once you are ready to strain your cocktail, dump the ice, and enjoy your cocktail ice-cold.
