This recipe is so simple that it can easily be followed even after having a Guinness or two. Blending mint chocolate ice cream with your favorite Florida liquor and your go to type of milk, this is the ultimate hard shake. Mix some up this Paddy’s Day and enjoy your Boozy Shamrock Shake. WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED FOR A BOOZY SHAMROCK SHAKE?
THE ALCOHOL
This Boozy Shamrock Shake really is a choose your own adventure, so first start by picking your favorite liquor. Just try to make sure it’s from a local Florida distillery! We tested out a bunch of different combinations and our favorite three were 1) Vodka 2) Bourbon, 3) Vanilla Rum or Vodka.
Vodka: Owing to its neutral flavor, vodka is the best choice if you just want a delicious milkshake that has a bit of a kick. Some of our favorite Vodkas made in Florida are:
- Banyan Reserve Vodka from St. Petersburg Distillery
- Coast Handmade Vodka from Kozuba & Sons Distillery
- Florida Cane Vodka from St. Augustine Distillery
- Pandemic at the Disco Vodka from Dark Door Spirits

Bourbon: This one was our personal favorite, and if you are a bourbon drinker then you will likely agree. The natural vanilla, brown sugar and light oak notes in bourbon are perfect for a hard shake. Some of our favorite Bourbons made in Florida are:
- Florida Double Cask Bourbon from St. Augustine Distillery
- Florida Reserve Bourbon from Timber Creek Distillery
- Old St. Pete Sweet Corn Whiskey from St. Petersburg Distillery

The Vanilla Rum or Vodka: If you really want to dial up the vanilla notes then a vanilla flavored rum or vodka is the way to go. This combination was a close second for us as the vanilla pairs perfectly with ice cream. Some of our favorite vanilla flavored spirits made in Florida are:
- Vanilla Bean Rum from Wicked Dolphin Distillery
- Vanilla Voyage from 82° West Distillery
- Everglades Vanilla Bean Vodka from Florida Cane Distillery.
THE MIXERS
The Ice Cream: You can use vanilla ice cream with a drop of peppermint extract, but then you will need to add green food coloring to get that signature emerald green color of a McDonald’s Shamrock Shake. A much easier option is to use mint chocolate chip ice cream. We keep things local to Florida by using The Publix Premium Classic Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. You’ll want to buy the half gallon tub – there’s no such thing as too much ice cream.
Recommended Ice Cream: Publix Mint Chocolate Chip
The Milk: The milk helps loosen up the shamrock shake a little bit so that it is actually a milkshake vs just blended ice cream. You can use whatever milk is your favorite- regular milk or milk alternatives all work here. We used oat milk from Oatly. This is our favorite milk alternative as it gives you that same creaminess that you get with regular milk which is what you need for this hard shake.
Recommended Milk: Oat Milk – Oatly
HOW SHOULD I SERVE A BOOZY SHAMROCK SHAKE?
The Garnish
The Whipped Cream: To make this boozy shake even more decadent, add a generous serving of whipped cream to the top. Spray cream is the easiest to use and you really can’t beat Reddi Wip.
Recommended Whipped Cream: Reddi Wip Original Whipped Topping
The Sprinkles: We’ve come this far, so why not go full St. Patrick’s Day? Add some green colored cake sprinkles to complete the ultimate Paddy’s Day spiked shake.
Recommended Green Sprinkles: Wilton Green Cake Sparkles
The Cherry: The cherry on top is… well it’s a cherry. We always use Luxardo Maraschino Cherries. These delicious little gems are expensive but trust us they are worth every penny. An absolute must for the bar cart, especially if you enjoy an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan.
Recommended Cherry: LUXARDO Maraschino Cherries, 14.1 oz
